TENTATIVE SCHEDULE OF COURSES FOR THE YEAR 2021-22

Courses

Faculty Induction Program (formerly Orientation Program)

Unlike teachers in school education, faculty in higher education usually joins the teaching profession without any formal training in teaching, learning or assessment. Understanding and capabilities in these areas along with awareness of policies, governance and administrative structures are developed informally out of their own experiences or from experiences shared by colleagues. One of the mandates set by the University Grants Commission is the development and implementation of a high quality Faculty Induction Program for newly recruited faculty in higher education institutions. This can help new teachers to improve their teaching and management skills, adjust to the culture of higher education institutions, and better understand their professional responsibilities. The Commission has designed a formal, systematic Faculty Induction Program for transition of new

It is mandatory for every newly appointed college/university teachers (full time)   to attend Faculty Induction Program prior to his/her regularization /confirmation.    The main purpose of Faculty Induction Program is to make a teacher aware about the administrative set-up, sensitize him/her to classroom realities and understand the bond between different stakeholders for realizing the professional aspirations and developing as agents of socio-economic change and national development. UGC will decide, from time to time, whether it will take place in online mode or offline (physical) mode.

The Induction Program for training Faculty & Academic Staff in Central and State Universities, Centrally Funded technical Institutions, and Degree & PG Degree colleges will familiarize them in their roles as freshly inducted university teachers. It will orient them on various generic aspects of teaching learning, instructional methodologies, assessment and evaluation techniques, ICT enabled teaching learning, and equip them with knowledge of University rules and regulations, basics of governance and administration.

Duration:

The entire program will be residential and, in order to complete all the modules, it will ideally require 170 to 175 hours, including some project work and field visits. An ideal duration of the program will therefore be approximately 1 month (excluding Sunday and National Holidays).

Rationale of Faculty Induction Program:

  1. To sensitize and motivate the faculty to adopt learner centered approaches, ICT integrated learning and new pedagogic approaches to teaching- learning, assessment tools in higher education.
  2. Implement curriculum reforms in the context of interdisciplinarity, multi-disciplinarity and applied approaches to knowledge.
  3. Adopt flexible evaluation processes which are more scientific to evaluate multiple skills and competencies of students.
  4. Promote four possible types of faculty development: personal (interpersonal skills, career development, and life planning issues); instructional (course design and development, instructional technology); organizational (ways to improve the institutional environment to better support teaching); and professional (ways to support faculty members so that they fulfill their multiple roles of teaching, research, and service).
  5. To promote academic excellence, teaching innovation, research capabilities and leadership skills.
  6. To improve the professional capability and performance of teachers to deliver effective and quality learning.

Refresher Course

For the Refresher course, participation in the orientation program is a prerequisite for admission. The teacher may apply for the refresher courses of their subject in subject based RCs or in the inter-disciplinary refresher courses after a one-year gap following an orientation course. Also, there should be a minimum gap of one year between two RCs, though it may be relaxed if an adequate number of participants is not available or it is essential for the teacher to fulfill eligibility conditions for career advancement as prescribed by the UGC from time to time.

Part time/ad-hoc/temporary/contract teachers who have been teaching for at least three academic sessions in an institution without differentiating them on the basis of type of management, which has been affiliated to a university program/ refresher courses to enhance their skills.

Attendance Requirement & Leave Provision

In both Faculty Induction Programs and Refresher Courses, participants should attend all sessions on all working days. No leave is permissible except for emergency or exceptional case/circumstances where a maximum of day leave may be granted by Director, HRDC. Participants who availed such leave will have to compensate the same number of days in the next program and such participants may be given certificate after completion of the course.

Evaluation of Participants:

In the concluding week of the program, Experts, preferably external, may be asked to assess the participants on the basis of multiple-choice objective tests, and give grades to participants, taking also into account other evaluations already done.

The grading should be as follows:

  • A+: 85 percent and above (ii)
  • A: 70 per cent to less than or equal to 84 percent
  • B: 60 per cent to less than or equal to 69 per cent
  • C: 50 per cent to less than or equal to 59 per cent
  • F: Below 49 per cent

Those teacher participants who get F grades are required to repeat the program after a gap of one year without financial commitment to UGC-HRDC.

The total marks are to be fixed at 100 and the same may be decided in the following manner:

  • Overall response - 20
  • Seminars (in diverse topics mentioned in component A) – 20
  • Project/survey/others (topics like climate change, environment and social connect etc.) - 20
  • ICT based teaching/ MOODLE/ Micro-teaching/participation – 20
  • Multiple-choice objective tests -20

The above distribution may be adjusted to meet specific requirements. The grades should be indicated on the certificate to be given to the teacher participant at the end of the program.

Short Term Courses/ Workshops

The short term courses/ workshops may have 4 to 6 working days as directed by UGC on time to time. Generally all the STPs are inter-disciplinary in nature.
