2.          Brief Introduction of the Department:

 

Anthropology department has been actively involved in academic as well as research in the field of Physical/ Biological and Social-cultural Anthropology. It came in to existence in July 1957 from its mother department viz. Anthropogeography. Currently the Department is headed by Prof. Rajesh Kumar Gautam who is internationally known for his contribution in the discipline. Prof. Gautam is recipient of prestigious Raman Fellowship. He did post-doctorate from Montclair State University, NJ, USA. During 2016-17, he taught in Montclair State University, NJ, USA as a International visiting professor.

The department is jewelled by six renowned faculties who are known for their contribution in the discipline viz. Prof. A.N. Sharma, Prof. K.K.N. Sharma, Prof. Rajesh Kumar Gautam, Dr. Soniya Kaushal, Dr. A. Bijyayasundari Devi and Dr. Sarvendra Yadav. They are specialized in varied field of biological and socio-cultural Anthropology.

The Department is credited with various research books and research papers in various national/international journal and also actively involved in organizing various National, International conferences/symposia/seminars. Under the scheme of global initiatives of academic network (GIAN), the Department has organized 3 programs and hosted international faculty from USA and Poland. Two of such program was organized by Prof. Rajesh Kumar Gautam and one by Dr. Sarvendra Yadav.

The department has produced 98 Ph.Ds', whereas currently 19 research scholars are pursuing their Doctoral Degree. Noteworthy research contributions have been made on various areas of human nutrition and growth, tribal health, dermatoglyphics, osteology, physiology, serology, obesity and biochemical genetics.

Alongwith post-graduation teaching and research, the department is also catering its teaching and research activities to more than 300 under-graduation students in each semester/session. The major feature of the department is organizing a month long fieldwork-cum-training to its post graduate students. This department has produced number of eminent scholars, academicians and administrators. Noteworthy among them are six Vice-Chancellors and several scientists. One of the alumni Prof. I.S. Chouhan was appointed as High Commissioner of India in Fiji. . Dr. Yogesh Atal has served as Director, Social Science Division, UNESCO.

The world renowned Social Scientist and Anthropologist Prof. S.C. Dube was the founder Head of Department; later on it was succeded by emient scholars viz. Prof. Leela Dubey, Prof. Samrendra Saraf, Prof. P.K. Shrivastava, Prof. H.N. Pateria and Prof. Ramesh Choubey.
