  1. Brief Introduction of the Department :

Post graduate teaching of sociology was initially started combined with the Department of Anthropology in the year 1965 under the dynamic leadership of internationally renowned personality Professor S.C. Dube. By the recommendations of the U.G.C. review committee, Undergraduate teaching of Sociology was started in 1975.  The University established Independent Department of Sociology and Social Work in 1981. The Department endorses an interdisciplinary approaches keeping in the view of blending of Applied Sociology with a strong foundation of Basic/theoretical Sociology.

The Department has encourages the ethics of learning in which students are given an opportunity to participate actively in academic discussions. It  has  encourages  the  system  of  “Group Learning‟  by  forming small groups of students in each semester to develop  sociological perspectives among them towards the contemporary issues and problems relating to regional, national and international level.  The main thrust area of the Department is ‘Social structure, Culture and Change process in Indian society in particular and South Asia in general’.
