Brief Introduction of the Department:

Establishment : July 18^th,1946
The oldest Department started functioning along with the establishment of the Vishwavidyalaya on the above mentioned foundation day.
It started with faculty strength of 02 and student strength of 10. Philosophy as a course of study was included in the B.A. Degree Programme in the year 1946.
The P.G. (M.A.) programme of study was initiated in the year 1950.
M.Phil. Programme of study was initiated in the year 1990.
Ph.D Programme of study was initiated in the year 1952.

Presently, the department has strength of three faculties (Three Professors) alongwith two Guest Faculty. It is the prestigious department of Doctor Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, Sagar. Since its inception the department is maintaining its continous growth. The department is engaged in imparting three years Undergraduate programmes, two years Postgraduate programmes and Ph.D. programmes.

Vision & Mission :

To bring to accomplishment and realization, the vision and mission of the University by creating congenial epistemic culture, erudition and categories so as to promote hermeneutical endeavors both at potential and actual contexts around the fabric of Indian Knowledge System.

Distinguished features/achievements:

Ambika Datta Sharma has been awarded with Shankar Fellowship for the first time in the country by the Department of Culture, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh for the year of 2021-2023
Ambika Datta Sharma has been conferred with prestigious Pranwananda Darshan Award in 2019, Naresh Mehta Smriti Wangmaya Samman 2007 and UGC, Research Award 2006 to 2009.
Pratap Chandra was served as fellow of Indian Institute of Advanced Study Shimla.
Arjun Mishra was conferred with prestigious Pranwananda Darshan Award during 1980’s
Department has prepared भारतीय दर्शन बृहत्कोश in 40 comprehensive volumes during 1982-1987 under the direction of Prof. Arjun Mishra and Mahamahopadhyaya Bhachchu lal Awasthi
Osho Rajneesh(born Chandra Mohan Jain, 11 December 1931 – 19 January 1990), also known as Acharya Rajneesh, Having completed his BA in philosophy at D. N. Jain College in 1955, he earned his M.A. in Philosophy From Department of Philosophy, University of Sagar, in 1957.

Uniqueness of the department :

It is only department of Philosophy of Central India were UG, PG & D. Programmes runes with Choice Based Credit Systems.
The department of Philosophy is among only few departments of the country were textual studies are promoted in PG and Ph.D. courses.
