Events & Reports

The department keeps on holding seminars, invited lectures and various academic and cultural activities around the year in order to facilitate teaching, learning, and research. The department started the Swaminathan Memorial Lecture series in the year 2015. In it, renowned academicians and intellectuals in different spheres are invited every year for addressing the students and the teaching staff on various research-oriented topics with a view to widening the horizon of knowledge of the students and the faculty every year. Cultural competitions and play performances are also organized regularly to give exposure to the talents and potentials of the students and to ensure their all-around development. Cultural Events:

 1. Workshop on Theatre, entitled From Text to Performance from 19 to 25 September 2015 by Ms. Abanti Chakraborti, Director, Kolkata Alchemy, winner or the prestigious Ustad Bismilla Khan Yuva Award by Sangeet Natak Academy, Government of India. Students of the department participated in the Workshop and presented Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night in the Valedictory function of the workshop.

Drama- Fire and the Rain by Girish Raghunath Karnad performed by the students of the Department of English and OEL in the Valedictory function of the Workshop entitled Literary Cultural History of South Asia organized by the Department of English, Dr. H. S. Gour Vishwavidyalaya (A Central University) Sagar, M.P. on 22nd and 23rd October 2019

 

  1. Aksharkulam, one week mega cultural festival from 25th February to 2nd March 2019. The event constituted of competitions like Poetry Writing, Poem Recitation, Debate, Story Writing, Graffiti, Poster Making, Solo Song, Group Song, Solo Dance, Group Dance and Short Film Making.

  3.  Drama Mcchakaikā of Śūdraka was performed by the student of the department on the eve of the Valedictory function of the Aksharkulam festival on 2nd March 2019.

  4. Weekly Literary Activities under the auspices of the Literary Association of the department:- open - Lectures, Debate Competitions, Film Shows and Group discussions etc. Students enthusiastically participate in all activities.
  • Impersonate a character from the drama prescribed in the course or any other work of the prescribed author.
    • Students of the department impersonated characters from Macbeth, Paradise Lost, The Rivals, Abhigyansakuntalam, Uttaramacarita and the like.
  • Drama/ Play Adaptation:
    • Students of the department in groups presented short adaptations and skits based on Kalidasa’sAbhijnana Shakuntalam’, Bhavabhuti’s, ‘The Uttarramcharita’, Ilango Adigal’s ‘The Book of Banci’, in Cilappatikaram: The Tale of an Anklet, Mcchakaikā of Śūdraka, Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’, Chaucher’s, Wife of Bath’s Prologue, Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost’ and ‘Samson Agonistes’, Swift’s ‘Gulliver’s Travels’, and Sheridan’s ‘The Rivals’, Vijay Tendulkar’s ‘Ghasiram Kotwal’ etc were performed.
  • Translation as an Art.
    • Students of the department compared, assessed and critically analysed translations and their originals in order to experience the problems and prospects of literary translations. Students studied different translations of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s stories and poems, Srilal Shukla’s ‘Raag Darbari’, Munib-ur-Reman’s ‘Tall Buildings’, Kedarnath Singh’s ‘On reading a love poem’, Ananthamurthy’s ‘Samskara’, Vijay Tendulkar’s ‘Ghasiram Kotwal’ and the like.
  • Creative Adaptation review.
    • Students of the department compared, assessed and critically analysed onscreen adaptations of literary classics like, Homer’s The Illiad, Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’, Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost’ and ‘Samson Agonistes’, Swift’s ‘Gulliver’s Travels’, Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party, Eugene O'Neill’s ‘Mourning Becomes Electra’ Edward Albee’s ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ and the like.Short skits on the dramas prescribed for reading.
