Brief Introduction to the Department :
Department of Education came into existence initially as Post Graduate Basic Training (PGBT) College Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1961. The PGBT College was also called as Government College of Education (Shaskiya Snatkottar Shiksha Mahavidhyalaya). It was a famous Teachers’ Training Institute in the Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh running B.Ed., M.Ed. and Diploma training programmes. On 19 June, 1967 the Madhya Pradesh government handed over this college through letter no. Trgk/67/2053 to Saugor University with all its physical and human resources and was renamed as ‘University College of Education’.
After the up-gradation of the university in to a Central University in 2009, this University College of Education with all its entities and amenities was transformed into a Department of Education at 27 March, 2011 (Ref: Item No. IV SA 1, Meeting of AC held on 27.12.2010). In December, 2015 Department of Education received grant of worth Rs. 8.76 Cr. under Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT) scheme of Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education), Government of India, New Delhi for the up-gradation of Department of Education into School of Education. Two centers namely Centre for Pre-service Teacher Education (CPSTE) and Centre for Professional Development of Teacher Educators (CPDTE) are functioning under the School of Education (Item no AC: 12:2 (3) of Academic Council Meeting held on July 4-5, 2016). Department of Education offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes with Choice Based Credit System.
Objectives :
- To conduct various teacher education programmes to meet the teaching requirements of elementary, secondary and higher education.
- To conduct research in curriculum development, pedagogy, inclusive education, language teaching and gender issues.
- To equip pupil-teachers with knowledge, skill and competencies to face the Indian and global challenges.
- To promote the indigenous tradition of teacher-student relationship (Guru-Shishya parampara) in various fields of humanities, arts, crafts, sciences, technologies and yoga (psychological and physical education).
- To develop School of Education as model institutions of teacher education.
- To introduce and nurture innovations in the education system so as to reflect India's spiritual knowledge, robust intellectuality and inexhaustible creativity.
- To publish and disseminate results of advanced research relating to teachers' education for purposes of advancement of capacities to teach and learn among professional teachers as also among parents, social educators and social workers.
- To promote national and international cooperation in teachers' education as also in the development of teaching-learning material through online programmes, documentaries, musical and dramatic programs and films.
