Overview of the Department

The Department of Education came into existence initially as Post Graduate Basic Training (PGBT) College, Government of Madhya Pradesh, in 1961. The PGBT College was also called the Government College of Education (Shaskiya Snatkottar Shiksha Mahavidhyalaya). It was a famous teachers' training institute in the Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh running B.Ed., M.Ed., and Diploma training programs. On 19 June, 1967, the Madhya Pradesh government handed over this college through letter no. Trgk/67/2053 to Saugor University with all its physical and human resources and was renamed as ‘University College of Education.'

After the upgradation of the university into a central university in 2009, this university college of education with all its entities and amenities was transformed into a department of education on 27 March 2011 (Ref: Item No. IV SA 1, Meeting of AC held on 27.12.2010). In December 2015, the Department of Education received a grant worth Rs. 8.76 Cr. under the Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT) scheme of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education), Government of India, New Delhi, for the upgradation of the Department of Education into the School of Education. Two centers, namely the Center for Pre-service Teacher Education (CPSTE) and the Center for Professional Development of Teacher Educators (CPDTE), are functioning under the School of Education (Item no. AC: 12:2 (3) of the Academic Council Meeting held on July 4-5, 2016). The Department of Education offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs with a choice-based credit system.

To emerge as a center of excellence in teacher education, educational research, innovation, and community engagement by nurturing competent, ethical, inclusive, and socially responsible educators committed to nation-building, sustainable development, and global educational transformation in alignment with NEP 2020 and Indian Knowledge Systems.

To prepare professionally competent, reflective, and value-oriented teachers equipped with 21st-century skills, digital competencies, and pedagogical excellence.
To promote innovative teaching, interdisciplinary learning, educational technology integration, and research-based practices in teacher education and educational studies.
To foster inclusive, equitable, learner-centered, and sustainable educational practices for holistic human development and social transformation.
To encourage critical thinking, creativity, leadership, ethical values, and lifelong learning among students, teachers, and researchers.
To strengthen community engagement, extension activities, school-university partnerships, and outreach programs for educational empowerment and social responsibility.
To integrate Indian Knowledge Systems, constitutional values, environmental consciousness, and global perspectives into curriculum, pedagogy, and research practices.
To contribute to educational policy, innovation, and institutional development through quality research, consultancy, academic collaborations, and professional excellence.

Admission

Admission Process & Procedure

Admissions to the B.A. (Education), Master of Education (M.Ed.), and Master of Arts (M.A.) in Education programs are based on the scores obtained in the Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG and CUET-PG). Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), CUET is a national-level entrance examination that provides a unified platform for students seeking admission to undergraduate and postgraduate programs offered by participating central, state, deemed, and private universities across India. Candidates are required to meet the prescribed eligibility criteria and secure valid CUET scores for consideration in the admission process.

Admission to the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) is granted on the basis of performance in the National Common Entrance Test (NCET), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). As a national-level entrance examination, NCET serves as a gateway for aspiring educators to gain admission to this innovative and multidisciplinary teacher education program envisioned under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The selection process ensures transparency, merit, and equal opportunity for candidates across the country. Prospective applicants are required to appear for NCET and obtain a valid score to be considered for admission, subject to the fulfillment of the prescribed eligibility criteria.

The Ph.D. program offers opportunities for rigorous research and scholarly inquiry in various areas of education discipline, fostering innovation and academic excellence. Admission to the Ph.D. (Education) program is conducted on the basis of UGC-NET qualification, in accordance with the applicable regulations of the university and the University Grants Commission (UGC) https://www.ugc.gov.in/pdfnews/6669193_Letter-NET-for-Admission-to-PhD.pdf. Eligible candidates who have qualified for UGC-NET are invited to apply for admission and pursue advanced research in the education discipline under the guidance of experienced faculty members.
